Each year, Google’s and Samsung’s midrange phones only get better, and the same is true for the new Pixel 8A and recently arrived Galaxy A35 5G. Google unveiled the Pixel 8A, which costs $500, on Tuesday but will not go on sale until May 14. Meanwhile, the price of Samsung’s Galaxy A35 5G, which was released on April 18, is $400. Both Google and Samsung want to duplicate the experience of their high-end smartphones smartphones in a more affordable package. Samsung has invested in the screen and battery size, while Google has looked to the processor and software to increase performance. The two phones vary by $100, and the added money bring perks such as wireless charging, more RAM, and more software features. Here’s a, closer look at the Pixel 8A and Galaxy A35 5G.
Display
One of the most significant differences between the Galaxy A35 5G and Pixel 8A in terms of phone screen is the size. The panel of Samsung’s phone is 6.6 inches large, whereas the display of Pixel 8A is 6.1 inches long. That might not sound too different, but as mentioned earlier, screens for our cell phones are relatively small. The panels of both are type of OLED, and both can increase their refresh rates up to 120Hz to ensure smoother scrolling. Pixel 8A, however, is more densely pixelated than Galaxy A35 5G 430 pixels per inch versus 389 pixels per inch. This much isn’t particularly surprising given the comparative dimensions of their panels.
Processor
Samsung and Google’s budget phones also go in different directions with their processors. The Pixel 8A is powered by the Tensor G3, the same chip that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro has. In contrast, the Galaxy A35 5G is powered by the midrange Exynos 1380. As I said earlier, we’ll only find out about how it compares when we get to testing. Nevertheless, the Pixel 8, which is more similar to the Pixel 8A, reports getting a higher score than the Galaxy A35 on the Geek bench 6 general computing test.
Cameras
Both phones have an ultrawide camera to go with their standard wide cameras. Their resolution, though, does impact each one’s quality. The Pixel 8A takes photos with a 64-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, while the Galaxy A35 5G photos use a 50-megapixel main sensor, with an 8-megapixel ultrawide and a 5-megapixel macro camera. However, it is not all about resolution; the sensor’s size and the image process pipeline also play a major role. The new Google phone also uses several of the company’s AI-powered editing features, established with the Pixel 8 like the Audio Magic Eraser, Best Take, and Magic Editor. Samsung’s AI feature is absent from the Galaxy A35 5G for now. However, it may come to the phones on a later software update. A support page says that the Galaxy A35 5G will work with several Galaxy AI features. However, the features cannot be found as of the article’s publication. Although Samsung has brought Galaxy AI software to their older Galaxy S phones and the foldable, that feature has not been introduced into the A series.
Battery and storage
In terms of battery capacity, the Galaxy A35 5G is ahead of the Pixel 8A for at least current. The Samsung phone
phone has a 5,000 mAh battery, the Pixel 8A being the less serious one of 4,492 mAh. And in terms of recharge time, Samsung’s phone is also the one on the line, as it supports up to 25W fast charging, while the Pixel 8A does not support more than 18W. Again, the numbers alone do not count but to reach those speeds, you also need a compatible power adapter so that it needs to be purchased separately. In addition, battery life does not depend only on its capacity. It matters how power-efficient the software, but also how power-efficient the processor, is. The Pixel 8A also has wireless charging. The Galaxy A35 5G has a major advantage on board storage. It is one of the few new phones that use the extra storage has the ability to add another 1TB of extra storage through a microSD card.
The Galaxy A35 5G and Pixel 8A will provide you with 128GB by default. Still, the pixel 8A is available in a 256GB version, but it is only available in obsidian , which is essentially black. However, the Pixel 8A has more RAM than the Galaxy A35 5G: 8GB and 6GB, respectively.
Software support
Google will also support the Pixel 8A for seven years of Android OS and security updates, just like it did with Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Notably, that’s a big deal for three reasons. First, your Pixel 8A won’t feel ancient in two years. Secondly, you will keep getting new features for years to come. Samsung, on the other hand, offers four generations of Android
Android OS updates and five years of security updates for the Galaxy A line-up. For the moment, the device powerhouse only offers seven years of software upgrades for the Galaxy S24 series.
Overall thoughts
Both the Galaxy A35 5G and Pixel 8A offer a lot for their price. Even if the Pixel 8A becomes more expensive, that $100 buys you wireless charging and software support that is two or three years longer. The cheaper Galaxy A35, on the other hand, has a much larger screen and the expandable storage that is dear to many. Further testing will show more.
